for meditation
Now Playing: stars by david crowder band
"Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all. both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. in your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. and now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name. but who am i, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? for all things come from you, and of your own have we given you." 1 chronicles 29:11-14

enlighted hearts
Now Playing: the spoiled one by 238

"remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know

  • what is the hope to which he has called you,
  • what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,
  • and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places" ephesians 1:16-20

as i'm studying through the prayers in the pauline epistles, this seems to really fit with wednesday's thinking...

our eyes are blind
Now Playing: sticks are woven in the spokes by 238

'And as they went out of Jericho, a great crowd followed him. And behold, there were two blind men sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!" The crowd rebuked them, telling them to be silent, but they cried out all the more, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!" And stopping, Jesus called them and said, "What do you want me to do for you?" They said to him, "Lord, let our eyes be opened." And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him.' Matthew 22:29-34

am i crying out desperately for open eyes? do i care what the crowd says? Jesus please touch me that i might see YOUR glory!!!

rules rules rules
Now Playing: rest for the weary by cool hand luke

"but the fruit of the Spirit is LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS, SELF-CONTROL; against such things there is no law." Galatians 5:22-23

i read through all of galatians today and was just struck by the "why?" of the law, and this small comment tagged on at the end of the fruit of the Spirit. when i do as i ought, there is no law. usually, if i am complaining about a rule, it is often because i am breaking it. maybe i should just do as i ought...

"if we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit." galatians 5:25

treasure?
Now Playing: if i stand by rich mullins

"And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart.

But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.

And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.

For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;

always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies."

2 Corinthians 3:18-4:10

used this passage for two different meetings yesterday - i'm still meditating on it - chewing on everything it says...

the Lord saves
Now Playing: the color green by rich mullins

"And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua." numbers 13:16

interesting... "hoshea" means "salvation", "joshua" means "the Lord is salvation"... the greek equivalent of "joshua"? "JESUS"

"the Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall i fear? the Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall i be afraid?" psalm 27:1

Now Playing: song of the harlot by the violet burning

some verses i've been meditating on....

"and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." acts 4:12

"epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, greets you, always struggling on your behalf in his prayers, that you may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God." colossians 4:12

"let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity." 1 timothy 4:12

"for the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." hebrews 4:12

i'm a noticer of patterns...

verses for a new year
Now Playing: old ironsides... the new disc from mars ill :)

then those who feared the LORD spoke with one another. the LORD paid attention and heard them, and a book of rememberance was written before him of those who feared the LORD and esteemed his name. "they shall be mine," says the LORD of hosts, "in the day when I make up my treasured possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him. then once more you shall see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve Him." malachi 3:16-18

can you tell the difference in me? can the world see it in you?

so sometimes i think i have it rough...
Now Playing: humm by the violet burning

i've been reading ezekiel - talk about some difficult things in service to God! lying on your side by a model of jerusalem for 390 days, then switching sides for 40 more... eating only bread you have baked over dung... being mute for the course of your ministry (unless God gives you something specific to say) - pretty difficult, but i read the toughest today:

the word of the Lord came to me: 'son of man, behold, i am about to take the delight of your eyes away from you at a stroke, yet you shall not mourn or weep, nor shall your tears run down. sigh, but not aloud; make no mourning for the dead. bind your turban, and put your shoes on your feet; do not cover your lips, nor eat the bread of men.' so i spoke to the people in the morning, and at evening my wife died. and on the next morning i did as i was commanded.  - ezekiel 24:15-18

what minor difficulties i so often complain about! what insignificant problems do i use as excuses to be disobedient to the Lord's commands!

Oh God - thank You for Your blessings. help me to be faithful (no matter what!)

my mind works in equations
Now Playing: self destruct and die by dead poetic

so i've been pretty familiar with the concept found in proverbs 9:10, "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight," but yesterday as i was reading proverbs 8, verse 13 really stood out to me, "the fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech i hate"!

so check it out: the fear of the Lord is:

  • the beginning of wisdom
  • hatred of evil

which of course reminds me of romans 12:9 (which i totally botched when quoting it at rise-up!) "let love be genuine. abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good." and what is the basis for the commands in romans 12? our understanding of God's mercy for us. (12:1)

hmmmm - so my life attitude comes ultimately from me having a proper perspective of who God is and what He has done.... and my actions spring from my attitude...

God - help me to focus on You, growing in wisdom and love for You, and help me to HATE what You hate.
